Pain sucks! We need it to know if something is hurting us but it's hard to remember that when something really painful happens.

However not all pains are equal, some hurt more than others. This is a collection of the most painful experiences in the world.

10. Childbirth

There's an evolutionary reason why childbirth is painful and long compared to other humans but we won't get into that here.
Obviously each individual experiences differ but the common comparison you hear is that it's like giving birth to a watermelon.
Labour has been described as a tug of war, a twisting, pulling, battle that leaves a searing pain in the woman's back, and it lasts for hours, in fact, the average lasts for 14 hours, which is crazy.

9. Bullet Ant

The Bullet Ant is regarded to have the most powerful insect sting in the world.
Some tribes in Brazil demand that a boy puts his hand in a glove filled with Bullet Ants as part of the initiation into manhood.
They get their name because their sting is supposed to feel like tiny bullets. The pain is instant and can continue for up to 12 hours or more.
There's almost nothing you can do from stopping your hands from shaking when you get bitten on it. You just wait it out and then be more careful next time, all just avoid them entirely.

8. Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and salts to form inside the kidneys. But they really really hurt, they can cause a severe fever and blood to appear in the victims urine, and that's just when they are sitting there.
Eventually, kidney stones have to leave the body through the urinary tract, and that hurts even more. The only silver lining I can think of is that they are often quite small.

7. Dercums Disease

This thing is really horrible and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Dercums disease is a rare condition where big, fatty tumors appear all over the body.
The tumors ate very painful, even sitting still and doing nothing, every inch of them is an agonizing pain all the time.
Perhaps the most scary thing is that scientists don't really know what causes them, and there's no known cure. We know that it mostly happens to middle aged women and that's it.

6. Cluster Headaches

These are the mother of all headaches, victims say that it hits them behind the eye, and it's like a very hot poker being thrift into your eye socket, and being held their for about an hour.
Others say it's like a paper-cut in the eye and in the center of their head.
The headaches get their name because they come in clusters, they happen a few times a day for a while, and there could be a break of weeks, months or even years between them.
You just don't know when they are going to hit next. They even sometimes called "Suicide Headaches" because of the suicidal thoughts that it causes when people have an episode.
The worst part is that scientists aren't yet sure what actually causes them.

5. Tooth Abscess

We all know how much a tooth pain can hurt, it's the kind of pain that you forget how bad it is until it happens again and you are like "This is hell".
Tooth Abscess is said to be the worst of them all, as the tooth decays, bacteria enters it and the wound around it causing it infection and swelling. If it gets to the bones, its game over.
The infection can spread to other teeth or to the whole jaw, causing excruciating pain, fever, swelling and just a general hatred of life.

Unfortunately, it can be a fairly common occurrence within athletes, if it is bad enough, they may require surgery to repair the damage.

3. Post-Dural Puncture Headache

The technical term for this is a puncture of the brain's dural mater. It is a thin membrane that surrounds your brain and spinal cord.
The puncture can sometimes be caused by surgery you've had or leaking spinal fluid in your body. Either way, the results are the same, it causes headaches to end all headaches.
It has been described as having a searing hot piece of metal spreading across your brain. Soon after it develop, victims start experiencing nausea, vomiting, pain in their limbs, hearing loss, a dizziness among others.
Moving makes it about 10 times worse.

2. Crucifixion

A lot of you may know this one as the way Romans killed Jesus Christ. For the Romans, crucifixion wasn't just an execution method, it was also a form of torture.
It's specifically designed to keep the victims alive as long as possible. The condemned was normally nailed to the cross which left their full weight hanging from their arms.
They would then be left outside for many days without any food or water until they die usually from exhaustion or asphyxiation.
That's if soldiers haven't lethally wounded them with weapons before that.
If you want to know how much crucifixion hurts, just know that's where the word "Excruciating" come from.

1. Lingchi

This is another form of torture that comes from medieval China, the name means "Death by a Thousand Cuts". The condemned will be tied to a wooden stake and he will be mutilated in multiple places.
The purpose was to cause as much pain as possible while still keeping the victim alive. Its also supposed to be a brutal act of humiliation and the event often draws a big crowd.
It was a punishment reserved for serious crimes such as treason but perhaps that it only got banned in the last century. It was a perfectly legal form of punishment in China up until 1905.
